students(posted March 7, 7:30 am) — Nearly one out of four high school graduates in Nicaragua will not go on to college this year because of economic limitations or poor academic marks, according to the National Council of Universities (CNU).

Of the 54,810 graduating seniors from last year’s class, some 42,000 will continue on to public or private university this year. The CNU says that represents a 13.5% increase in university enrollment from last year, according to a report in El Nuevo Diario.

An additional 12,810 students will not be moving on to higher education.

Of the 2,656 aspiring university students who took the National Engineering University’s (UNI) entrance exam last December, only 203 — 7% — passed with a grade above 60, according to UNI officials.
