(Prensa Latina) The number of dead and wounded people by traffic accidents in Nicaragua increased during the first half of the current year, compared to a similar period in 2015, according to a report by the National Police published today.
According to the report, quoted by the newspaper El Nuevo Diario, 19,582 traffic accidents were recorded in the first six months of 2016, compared to 15,978 recorded last year in the same period.
Those accidents caused the death of 381 people, most of whom (146) were at ages between 26 and 40 years, a larger figure than in 2015, which was 326 dead people, while those wounded went from 2,039 to 2,361.
The Police said improper turns, lane invasion and pedestrians’ imprudence were the main cause of accidents, representing 58.7 percent of the total.
Meanwhile, the authorities are carrying out a strong campaign throughout the country for road security, seeking to rise awareness from drivers and pedestrians about protection and preservation of life on the road.
