Earthquake rattles Pacific coast

(posted March 28, 9:30 am/ Updated with damages 1:30 pm) — Nicaragua this morning was rattled by a violent 5.2-magnitude earthquake that was felt in Managua and along much of the Pacific coast.

The quake occurred at 8:36 a.m. local time, 14 kilometers southwest of Masachapa, at a depth of 66 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geographical Survey. Nicaragua’s Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) is not reporting anything, at the moment.

The government reports that several walls were cracked in the schoolhouse of Colegio Santa Teresita in District VI of Managua, and a wall collapsed at the Douglas López school in the Barrio Waspam, in Managua. Several schools were evacuated in the capital, but no one was reported injured in the quake.
