The Nicaraguan Government envisages the presence of companies from the region, through partnerships, in the construction of the inter-oceanic canal of Nicaragua. According to Paul Oquist, Minister-Secretary for National Policy of the Nicaraguan Presidency, this work is expected to revolutionize global maritime trade.
Oquist urged Dominican companies to join the initiative, saying that once concluded, the canal will have two ports, two free-trade zones, an oil pipeline and a railway from coast to coast.
“The beginning of construction works is scheduled for late 2014 and they are expected to be completed by 2019″, said Oquist.
“Since in Nicaragua there are no large companies to perform mega-projects there will be thousands of subcontracts, which will represent an incentive for foreign companies to forge partnerships with ours”, he said.
“We expect this project to boost economies and provide workers of the region with several jobs” said Oquist.
