(March 4, 7:40 am) — Rumors of his death were exaggerated. After 10 days of hiding from the world, and amid swirling international rumors of his death, Nicaragua’s milk-carton president reappeared in public last night to welcome recently named Roman Catholic Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, who arrived back from the Vatican last night shortly before 9 p.m.
“You performed the miracle of resurrecting me; they said I was dead and by coincidence I am appearing now that are you returning,” Ortega told Cardinal Brenes, who laughed politely.
Ortega said he was off to Venezuela to pay worship to Hugo Chávez and commemorate the one-year anniversary of his “transition to immortality.”
Brenes, for his part, noted that it was 28 years and nine months ago since Nicaragua’s first Roman Catholic Cardinal, Miguel Obando y Bravo, returned from the Vatican. He then went out into the night to greet thousands of Nicaraguan faithful who lined the streets in anticipation of his arrival.
