Costa Rica Feels Threatened By Russians Arms in Nicaragua

NICARAGUA NEWS – Costa Rica’s Chancellor, Manuel González, expressed concern Thursday over Nicaragua’s “recent acquisition of military equipment and powerful weaponry fromRussia.”

“While it is a decision of each country how to invest their money, as part of the region and neighbouring country there is no doubt that it is something that gets our attention and concern, not only for us, but also the other countries in the region,” said González.

González added that the concern is real given the “risks” facing Costa Rica, after the invasion of the country’s northeast corner, the Isla Calero – Portillos, in 2010.

“We ask that the international community and our friends follow up and be informed about what is happening,” said the Chancellor.

The statements were made after González appeared before that country’s legislative committe on International Affairs, on Thursday morning, where he gave his report on the current state of relations with the government of Daniel Ortega.
