Nicaragua rattled by 6.4 quake

(posted March 2, 5:15 am) — A series of strong earthquakes off the northwestern tip of the country shook Nicaragua out of her sleep early this morning.

The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) reported seven tremors in front of Cosigüina Volcano between 3:37 – 4:32 a.m. Three of the quakes registered magnitudes over 5.0, and the strongest — felt all the way in Managua — registered 6.4 on the Richter Scale.

Similar tremors were reported this morning in El Salvador. At time of publication, there are no reports of damage.
