In a second statement, Independent doctors demanded that the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo declare the phase of community transmission in Nicaragua, after they denounced the spread of Covid-19.
The experts demanded the suspension of massive activities and the temporary closure of schools and non-essential activities, to care for patients infected with Covid and prevent its spread.
“We demand that the Nicaraguan state and government declare the community transmission phase and act accordingly, implementing mitigation measures for the epidemic, such as: the suspension of massive activities, the temporary closure of education centers (primary, secondary and superior), the suspension of non-essential activities that imply physical presence and -if necessary- the community quarantine, “the statement said.
No Quarantine
Until now, the Ortega Murillo regime has rejected any possibility of decreeing quarantine in the country, arguing that families need to work to bring daily food to their homes.
However, experts assure that the objective of these measures is to “decrease the rate of infections and deaths, as well as to reduce the saturation of the health system. The state cannot continue to evade its responsibility for the health of Nicaraguans. ”
The doctors also demanded “the cessation of the persecution and harassment of the health professionals”, who have denounced threats from the health authorities in the hospital centers to keep silent about the infections and deaths by Covid-19.
Another issue that worries health professionals is “the deliberate concealment and manipulation of the real number of people affected” with Covid-19, which prevents the application of epidemiological measures to contain and mitigate the SARSCov-2 outbreak.
The government has not issued an update on the official numbers in days, the current standing is 25 confirmed cases and 8 deaths. Before that, for more than a week the number of infected stood at 15 and 4 deaths.
