Jicaro Island Ecolodge taking steps to help children in need in Nicaragua

NICARAGUA JOURNAL — Nicaragua has long been a country living in poverty. It is a way of life for so many families and young children that many in the United States can’t even imagine. No clean water in the homes, no bathrooms, little accesss to education and health services. Fortunately, there are people who care and are working toward making a difference in the lives of these children of poverty in Nicaragua.

Jicaro Island Ecolodge is nestled on a small island in Lake Nicaragua just outside of Granada. Visitors are shuttled by boat to the island where you will find all conveniences you are accustomed to, however, they are providing it in an environmentally friendly fashion utilizing on site solar panels and water filtrations systems and sourcing food locally. Going above and beyond, inspired by the close knit islands community, they take dontations and contribute on a personal level to improve the lives of those who surround them.

One of the most notable things Jicaro has contributed to is the construction and maintenance of the Padre Nello School. This school consists of over 60 students in grades K-6 who must row themselves in by boat daily from the hundreds of small surrounding islands. Volunteers visit once a week to help clean and maintain the facility while others come to run a health center to see and treat sick children.

As of now, there is still no clean water nor bathrooms on site. This is where donations and continued support from Jicaro Lodge will help install solar panels to provide a small amount of lights and outlets in classrooms and to power a new water filtration system that will provide the children with clean running water as well as giving the surrounding community access to clean water as well. Also on the list will be a bathroom facility on site.

In addition to tackling the larger projects to support the community, the school is always in need of school supplies, clothing and toiletries for the attending kids.

By giving back and keeping their own resort eco-friendly, Jicaro Island Ecolodge is ensuring a promising future for the children of the Lake Nicaragua community. To help these children and community in need, you can make cash donations through Earth Equilibrium or contact Jicaro Island Ecolodge to ship items directly to be delivered to the Padre Nello School and community children.
