Nicaragua: Footwear Exports Up 26%

NICARAGUA NEWS — In the first nine months of the year $15.9 million worth of footwear was exported, which is 26% more than in 2013.

The sector’s competitiveness in terms of labor costs, incentives to industry, preferential access to key markets and strategic location of the country, are the main factors attributed to the growth in exports of Nicaraguan footwear.

The Investment Promotion Agency of Nicaragua, told Elnuevodiario.com.ni that “… The footwear industry in Nicaragua made great strides in 2011 and 2012, with investment from Latin America and Dikamar Tecshoes respectively. In 2012, Nicaragua achieved its goals in terms of exports of footwear, with the sum of US$37.5 million. ”

‘… The main footwear products coming out of Nicaragua are cow and goat leather moccasins and high heeled shoes, synthetic shoes, rubber boots and safety boots. Meanwhile, the main export destinations of footwear made in Nicaragua are the United States, Costa Rica and Panama. ”

Clarks is among the international brands produced in Nicaragua.  National brands include Rolter, Tosca and ECCO.

Nicaraguan exports include coffee, beef, shrimp, lobster, tobacco, sugar, gold and peanuts. Export from Nicaragua has improved since the establishment of the Central America-Dominican Republic Free Trade Agreement or CAFTA-DR.
