Thousands of Nicaraguans took part Saturday in a mass mobilization to fight infestation on households and public spaces by the Aedes aegypti mosquito that transmits the dengue fever, which has reached epidemic proportions.
Health ministry and public institution’s staff, different civil movements and neighbors are carrying out voluntary actions to rid the country of the vector.
The government called on social activism to ‘ fight for life’, since more than 1,500 people are hospitalized right now, according to Rosario Murillo, coordinator of the Communication and Citizenship Council.
In the wake of a sanitary alert issued by president Daniel Ortega, more than 52,600 blocks have been fumigated and more than seven million mosquito breeding sites have been detected and destroyed, according to official figures.
This year Nicaragua has reported 7,400 confirmed cases of dengue fever, and 18 people have died.
