(posted Dec. 19, 10 a.m.)– Demonstrating that it’s better to give than receive this holiday season, Sandinista magistrates in the Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday to uphold Law 840, the Law of the Great Interoceanic Canal, as it was written and approved by their party’s lawmakers last June.
In upholding the law, Sandinista judges rejected more than 30 constitutional challenges filed by some 180 Nicaraguan citizens and who argue that the private canal concession awarded to enigmatic Chinese businessman Wang Jing violates 40 articles of Nicaragua’s constitution related to national sovereignty, independence, the environment, and indigenous rights.
The resolution was generously gift-wrapped and placed under the tree as the Supreme Court’s last act of the year, giving the Sandinista magistrates just enough time to squeeze up the chimney and escape the building for Christmas vacation.
